You and I Are Polar Opposites: Sunny & Rainy Interlude 2 Summary
Interlude 2: Doesn't look like a good day for inviting Honda to lunch, huh?
This part is from Honda's POV.
Hallway in Front of the Staff Office: 13:05 (Lunch) β Rainy
Honda leaves the staff room after returning the key to the projector they used in 4th period. The teachers are always so busy that she's made up her mind to stay far away from the field of teaching in the future. The only reason why Honda is class representative is because the class selected her while she was out with a cold. Though returning the key isn't a big deal, every time she thinks about how her classmates are enjoying the minutes of lunch break they stole from her, she gets irritated. She's careful not to let it show because she doesn't want her school life to get more complicated, but she vents inside her head and to close friends. She decides that every time they make her do something annoying, she'll check in on her bias's stream as a reward for herself.
She's watching the stream while walking back to the classroom and sees the library. She wonders if Yamada managed to find Nishi. While she keeps people who give her inconsiderate or self-centered vibes at an arm's length, Nishi is a healing existence of the exact opposite type. As a result, she finds herself interested in how her romance is progressing. Yamada is also extremely straightforward, so Honda's not wary around him. Though she doesn't know everything about him, she knows that he's extremely simple-minded, and he's gone above and beyond this time in reading a whole book for Nishi. How cute, she thinks.
Honda normally wouldn't do this, but because she happens to be right in front of the library, she darts in and listens in on Yamada and Nishi talking. Nishi says she's happy that Yamada found the book interesting. Yamada suggests they talk about the book again sometime. Having confirmed that it's going well, Honda leaves the library as to not disturb them, her lips hurting from the face she's making.
Year 2, Class 8, Classroom: 13:10 (Lunch) β Rainy
Honda eats lunch alone. Usually, when people see this, they invite her to eat with them, but there's no one doing that today, so she gets to relax. Her food tastes better than usual because she got to witness something great. She likes eating with Nishi, but getting to eat by herself sometimes is nice too. But then someone taps her shoulder. Honda turns around and sees pink hair. It's the "funny girl,"1 who wants to return Nishi's textbook. Or at least "funny girl" is what Honda's been referring to her as in her head since she doesn't know this girl's name.
Honda tells her that she can leave the book on Nishi's desk. Suzuki does so and awkwardly asks Honda to tell Nishi that she was really careful not to harm her textbook at all. She's making overblown gestures as she says this and scurries away after putting Nishi's textbook down gingerly on her desk. For some reason, Honda feels her eyes trailing after Suzuki.
In the hallway, Suzuki says, "Thanks for waiting, Tani-kun!" Honda is surprised because the student standing in the hallway doesn't look like the Tani-kun she remembers. For some reason, his hair is different. Is he trying to change his image? she wonders. The two seemed like an impossible pair when she heard about them, but looking at them standing together now, they look like your average couple. Honda wonders if she's the only one who thinks that's kind of boring.
Year 2, Class 8, Classroom: 13:17 (Lunch) β Rainy
Nishi comes back right as Suzuki leaves, doing her best to look like she's not brimming with happiness. Honda starts making the face again to hide her grin and asks her what happened. Nishi gets flustered and asks what she means, and Honda immediately specifies she's asking about what happened in the library with Yamada. Nishi ends up telling her everything that's happened the past few days, causing Honda to split a lip from pulling them in too hard. They confirm that she isn't bleeding, and Nishi looks around for lip balm in her bag. Honda thinks about how nice of a girl Nishi is. She feels a bit bad for spying on her and Yamada earlier.
Honda: Thank you... This pain has taught me a valuable lesson...
Nishi: Huh?! What are you talking about?!
Honda doesn't explain and asks if she should go home first if Nishi is going to talk more with Yamada about the book after school. Nishi is surprised and tries to remember if she mentioned that plan to Honda. She didn't, Honda thinks, that's from what she overheard in the library. Nishi says that she promised to go home with Honda today, so she scheduled her conversation with Yamada to another day. Though Honda thinks that Nishi should strike while the iron's hot, a part of her is also happy that Nishi cares about their time together.
Just then, the peaceful background music that was playing over the PA system suddenly stops. They can hear the sound of someone adjusting the mic in the broadcasting room. Honda and Nishi are confused. Then there's the sound of the piano, and people in the classroom start talking and looking around. Honda realizes that it's the "Happy Birthday" song. Is it someone's birthday?
Honda and Nishi stare at each other as they listen to the song.
Personal Commentary:
Honda, I agree. Tani being normie fashionable is more boring than him being his typical boring self. Where's the contrast? Are we "Polar Opposites" here or not?
Also, while it is funny that she checked in on Nishi and Yamada, it is also an infringement on privacy, so good that she's learned her lesson.
Honda is such a real one, though. Always a fan of her.
Translation Notes:
As always, thanks to my friend @magical-pun-girl for helping with dialogue.
οΌγγγγγΌε₯³οΌ Honda uses this term when she sees Suzuki again at the school trip, but the English translation didn't bother to make it a nickname since it probably didn't sound natural and wasn't used often.↩
