Interlude 1

Sato, next is P.E.—!! ...or so I thought.

This part is from Satou's POV. Also, a quick note: her last name has a long vowel at the end, but her friends cut that off and say "Sato" as a nickname (written in katakana as well).

Year 2, Class 7, Classroom: 10:55 (Third period) — Rainy

Watanabe: Suzuki's definitely got the magic touch. I'm jealous.

Right after Suzuki declared that the skies were clear, it started pouring. P.E. was canceled and became a self–study period, and Suzuki is devastated.

Yamada: Your manga trope powers are way too strong.
Taira: How'd that jinx happen so fast?
Azuma: Flawless execution.
Watanabe: You controllin' the weather?

Tani tries to hold in a laugh and fails. Watanabe pouts at Suzuki's comedic timing and says she's a natural-born entertainer.

Suzuki (face-down on her desk): This wasn't the plan... My twist serve...
Satou: That would've been impossible either way.

Watanabe agrees that even normal serves are difficult. Satou thinks it's incredible that Suzuki is this sad when she's a disaster at all sports, tennis included. Last time, Suzuki whiffed all her serves, fell over in the court like she was in some comedy skit, and when she finally made contact with the ball, she sent the smash into the neighboring court. She's like this with badminton, volleyball, and basketball, also, but she's always been excited to play anyway. And whenever Watanabe is playing with her, she goes in for a high-five first despite having done nothing.

Satou thinks about how Suzuki tends to use a lot of energy on other people because she tends to attracts a crowd and wants to act upbeat for them because she likes them all.

Watanabe asks Tani if Suzuki's ever done anything similar¹ when they're together. Tani, who was studying diligently, looks at the ceiling lights and is quiet for some moments before saying that nothing comes to mind, but maybe there was something. Satou says that he doesn't need to answer this so seriously. Watanabe says, "Never, huh? Oh well." Tani gives a pensive "Yeah" in return. Potentially feeling that she's bothering him, Watanabe scoots away. Satou follows her and gives Tani a quick, "Sorry for getting in the way of your studies," as she passes by. Tani says that they weren't bothering him and closes his textbook. Satou realizes that he was probably reading up on the part he missed in social studies when he was trying to talk to Suzuki and that he was probably having fun when they were talking to him.

Watanabe has gone over to Azuma now. She's asking what Azuma's having for lunch. Azuma says Everyday Bread, Yeti edition. For a limited time, "Everyday Bread"² has a "Yeti Bread" version, which is sweet bread that only has two flavor options and comes with a Yeti sticker.

Watanabe: You collecting the stickers?
Azuma: No, I just couldn't find any bread I was in the mood for this morning at the convenience store.
Watanabe: And that's why you got Yeti Bread...?
Azuma: Yeah? I mean, the packaging's cute, isn't it?
Watanabe: So the sticker didn't even cross your mind...

Azuma looks over to the next seat, where Taira's sitting.

Azuma: Hey, Taira, wanna collect some Yeti Bread stickers?
Taira: Not going do that.
Azuma: How about you start collecting them now, and you get me a drink in exchange for this one here?
Taira: In what universe do those things have equal value?

Satou thinks to herself about how Taira always has sharp wording, yet it doesn't actually sound like the edge is aimed at others. Rather, she always hears it as him pointing it at himself. Interestingly enough, she doesn't feel like anyone feels particularly hurt by his way of speaking. This aspect of him reminds her of Azuma for some reason.

Watanabe is curious where Yamada went. Yamada would normally come right on over the moment he heard it was self-study to hang out with Suzuki, Watanabe, and Taira. Satou watches Watanabe go pale as she points to Yamada's seat.

Watanabe: L-look. He's...

Yamada is reading a book in his own seat. Not manga — a full-fledged novel. And he's concentrating like mad. They've never seen this happen before. Watanabe, shaken, rushes over to him.

Watanabe: What's wrong, Yamada... Are you feeling sick or something?

She feigns a consoling smile, like you would with someone at the hospital. Watanabe is sincerely worried.

Yamada: Hey, now. Even I read books.
Watanabe: You're lying.
Yamada: Is it that impossible to believe that I read?
Watanabe: ...By the way, what even is that book?
Yamada: Huh? It's fantasy.

Satou feels a little relieved that this simple answer is more like Yamada in the midst of this very unnatural situation.

Yamada: Anyway, 'scuse me, but I gotta get back to this. Let's chat later.

Satou and Watanabe stare at each other for a while before Watanabe opens her mouth.

Watanabe: It's gonna rain.³
Satou: It already is.

Satou's response is just what Watanabe wants to hear. The rain outside is intensifying, obscuring everything on the other side of the windows. Satou wonders how she should handle the weather on the way home. She can't help but feel like the intensity of this rain is Yamada's fault for reading a book. She wonders what happened to him.

Personal Commentary:

My guess is that Suzuki is the one who said this title? This breaks the pattern of random background characters commenting on the characters, but the rest of the chapters seem to follow that again later. Still don't get why they went with this naming. I even tried to match the A-side/B-side titles up to characters of the main cast, but they didn't quite fit.

Lots of cute banter in this interlude. Satou surprisingly has a good read on everyone. I guess that's not really that surprising considering her character, but I wasn't really expecting this sort of guide on how we should be perceiving everyone. The fact that she even caught that Azuma has similar self-image issues to Taira underlying her speech, for instance, is more insight than I expected to be present. Satou's read on Taira also clarifies that no one is really taking his words as being mean, despite what they might look like at face-value.

I think it's cute that Watanabe and Satou have this comedy duo going on and they're both aware of it. Watanabe says silly things and is happy when Satou follows up on it, and Satou knows that and follows her on purpose.

Suzuki and Yamada are apparently the weather-calling duo.
